EMPOWERU CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Semester Course Overview

SEMESTER COURSE: A comprehensive program intentionally designed with six units that cumulatively build student resilience.  At five lessons per week, 20-30 minutes each lesson,  most students complete the semester course in 12-14 weeks with an outcome of significant personal change.  Click here for more information on Semester Course.

UNIT 1: My Unique SELF

          WHAT YOUR STUDENT WILL LEARN:

-In this first unit of the semester course, students complete a self-evaluation of their strengths, values and take a comprehensive look at how satisfied they are in each area of their life (Academic, Personal, Emotional, Social).

-As a result, they identify goals in each "domain" that they will work toward throughout the semester.  

-This sample video from the values lesson helps students reflect on their own values, which continues throughout the course.

- OUTCOMES include confidence in their abilities, renewed commitment to their values and increased motivation to make change.

UNIT 2: CREATING PERSONAL CHANGE

          WHAT YOUR STUDENT WILL LEARN:

-Students learn to make lasting change by setting goals and understanding habits that help them or hurt them in meeting those goals.

-This sample video from lesson five of this unit helps students understand the importance of taking each individual step to effectively change a habit or reach a goal..

- Students take customized assessments to gain insight into how they respond to expectations and how they best make change.

-Based on what they learn, students identify three habit change strategies work best for them.

- Outcomes include understanding how they respond to expectations, insights into habit change strategies that will work best for them, and confidence from applying them to a practice goal.

Unit 3- The Power of Your Thoughts

          WHAT YOUR STUDENT WILL LEARN:

- Your teen will learn how to make their thoughts work for them so they are less consumed by worry and fear and have more control over thoughts and emotions.

- Students learn important Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) skills that help them challenge their negative and distorted thoughts and worries. This is a critical lifelong skill for distress management and emotional regulation.

-This sample video is from one of the lessons that focuses on how to create a growth mindset to develop a positive subconscious and their  Inner Coach over their Inner Critic.

UNIT 4 COPING WITH STRESS AND ANXIETY IN A HEALTHY EAY

          WHAT YOUR STUDENT WILL LEARN:

- Stress and anxiety are at an all-time high - and often, without even noticing - stress comes out in ways that are harmful to our health or relationships. 

- Students will learn to notice their stress triggers and response,  how to interrupt the stress response and how to choose both a proactive and reactive strategy that works best for them to "Attend and Manage" their stress. (See sample video from lesson four of this unit)

- By the end of this unit, your teen will have a game plan to  attend and manage their stress more effectively each day.

- Outcomes include better distress tolerance and overall improved control of stressors and emotions. See testimonials below.

UNIT 5 - Creating connections and Meaningful Friendships

          WHAT YOUR STUDENT WILL LEARN:

-Students crave belonging, but often feel like they are just trying to fit in – and struggle with how to find true, meaningful friendships in a world of technology.

- This sample video from the course helps students understand the different levels of friendship and what is expected of a friend at each level.

-Student learn strategies to build closer friendships, appropriate self-disclosure, as well as how to understand friendship changes/loss.

- Outcomes include increased self-awareness, more confidence and more satisfaction with friendships/self-acceptance. See testimonials below.

UNIT 6 LIFE BALANCE, PERSEVERANCE, AND TIME MANAGEMENT

          WHAT YOUR STUDENT WILL LEARN:

- As shown in this video, students learn about balance in the different areas of their life, analyzing if how they spend their time matches their values and goals and their "future self."

- Students gain insight into their limited energy and  how they need to balance depleting activities with replenishing ones without falling into "Comfort Escapes."

- They also learn about procrastination and use strategies they have learned in previous units to reclaim pockets of time and replace them with meaningful activities, leading to more fulfillment.

Outcomes: Less procrastination, more fulfillment, more motivation.
