District Implements Successful EmpowerU Summer Program to Bolster Rising 9th and 10th Grade Student Success

Situation

As a large and diverse school district in California, Twin Rivers Unified School District is recognized as a national leader in the effective use of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support to drive student success.

Post-COVID, more and more students were not succeeding because of non-academic barriers, including mental health. The Twin Rivers MTSS team identified a large group of rising 9th and 10th graders that were at risk of academic failure and targeted the summer of 2022 as an opportune time to jumpstart their success. Their goal was to find a partner that could deliver programming that would help each student earn much-needed credit while helping them learn skills to start the new school year with renewed confidence and motivation.

Partnership

Twin Rivers Unified School District had been partnering with EmpowerU for over a year to provide Educator Mental Health professional development programs. Because these programs had an overwhelming positive impact on teacher well-being and engagement, it made sense for the Twin Rivers team to extend EmpowerU programming to their student summer school initiative.

They targeted a 5-week timeframe for rising 9th and 10th graders to complete the full EmpowerU credit-bearing lessons combined with daily 1:1 student support by EmpowerU instructors. This successful pilot fueled the roll-out of EmpowerU programming to Twin Rivers high school students during the school year.
